May 21, 1967 - Sunday

Breakfast at 7:30 and off on to the open road again.  Driving through Tuscany now.  Just beautiful country with olive groves and hilly mountains all around.  Had delicious sweets and cafe long with Peggy and Greg at Arezzo - more beautiful scenery through Umbria.  Saw a beautiful lake called Trasimeno whose waters were azure blue.  Peruga and on to Asissi where we went into St. francis of Asissi Basilica.  Marvelous.

Had lunch at Giotto hotel in Asissi.  We loved Asissi.  Like to stay longer.  Went streets up, half some of them.  The meal was terrific and so was the wine.  Peggy bought a dress and so did Kay and Barbara.  A beautiful view of this hill town at a certain point we were taken to get pictures.  In outskirts we visited Santa Clara's Basilica.  - Our lady of The Angels.  Back to the journey to Rome.  Traffic jam quite bad.  Finally arrive at hotel.  Disappointed it is on outskirts of town.  Enter partially built modern place.  Although lobbies are beautiful, room is not completed as to towel racks - beds - drapery - shower and bath - not well planned as a whole.  In lobby a free drink of scotch for practicing first guests.  Hastily wash and had supper rather good.  Peg Greg ray and I take Hotel limosine to town for 1000 lyre.  Wander around - real interesting - Found wonderful Italian restraunts and went for table place not so crowded.  Charming - good good Italian food - Share table with Italian Milan couple -  She French - he Italian - and their french poodle!  apricot.  Ten years old.  fussy.  Has spaghetti but won't eat it till parmesan cheese put on top.  Amazing evening and pleasant.  They give us samples of what they have and we try to converse and all are happy.  beds cheaper than limosine ride.  Home to bed in hotel room.
