June 5, 1968 Beginning of Trip 2

June 5, 1968

Not much sleep the night before.  Everybody seemed to be roaming too.  Turned on Tom's small TV in the kitchen for Louise and heard the tragic news of the shooting of Bobby Kennedy.  at 4:55 A.M.  Put a sobering effect on our excitement about the trip.

Our ride came for us at 7:30 am and we were ready to go.  Ray drove and we missed a turn off but had plenty of time.  Met our friends at 9 am and we all had coffee and cakes together.  Everything fine!

Left 10 min. late because of some late arrivals.  Trip was pleasant - day is beautiful.   Had a nice lunch of BBQ chicken, roll, apple juice, potatoes and peas and choc cake.  Also Sherry on the rocks before hand.  Landing was a little bumpy.  Kids seemed to be thrilled.  Nice Canadian man next to Ray told us to spend our time in Montreal by going to Dominion Square on the west side of Mount Rachael.  Hired a taxi for 7$ plus tip one way (high) and had a bonus in the driver as he took us an especially interesting way, pointed out things of interest and told us some facts - population 2 million.  Montreal a great big modern city which somehow surprised us.

After leaving cab we walked to St. James Cathedral and went in.  It was a very good copy of ST. Peters in Rome.  Pope's Pulpit and everything.  Walked hither and yon down any street we had a mind to.  Stopped at Woolworths for coffee.  Sat in a park telling poor jokes and went in a bus back to air terminal but dispatch hired a cab as same price as bus for us - 1.50 per. Ambled around airport then checked in with B.O.A.C. Horrors!  David's reconfirmation was not there and we were frantic.  Our three were alright but this of course meant we would be stuck in montreal.     After a bad hour of standing by, we got the fourth seat, though we are not all sitting together.  Tom Dave and I are and ray is two rows behind.  Took off at 7:50 pm. Canadian time (6:50 Chicago time) and flight is smooth so far.  Are waiting for drinks before dinner and the menu looks real good.  Smoked ham, truffled paite and lamb cutlets etc. etc.

21:45 between Cartwright speed 580 mph 33000 feet est time arrival 6:30 scotish time.

Had a scotch and soda and the dinner was delicious.  Tom Dave and I had little small bottles of wine with the meal but we only let Dave have half of his and put the bottle in suitcase.  We all tried sleeping on and off but no luck.
