Breakfast and on to Padua.  more later - Went to St. Anthony's Cathedral - touched his tomb and said a prayer.  Mass going on - had espresso and back on bus.  On to Ferrara - beautiful roses and more espalier trees all through Italy their peach, apple, etc. trees are grown in the Espailer way.  Now to Bologna - Oldest university here in all of Italy.  On to Florence traffic terrible.  Finally arrived at Hotel.  Beautiful lobby, -  poorest room outside of Koblenz - ugh!  Quick lunch.  Not so good for first time.  Immediately sight seeing disappointed in Florence, not city itself, but not seeing what we wanted.  Too rushed and of course flood damage apparent .  Some water lines 23ft high down to 3ft or so.  Burial Chapel of Medici.  Two - Michaelangelo works in one - Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Night and Virgin held plus the two architects.  went to santa Croce [?]  saw Michaelangelo's tomb!   Also Galleleio's .  In Florence Cathedral (which is completely tiled on outside). could see the mark of the damage.  Saw baptistry where for centuries all the Florence children have been baptized.  In Cathedral saw one of Pieta's of Michaelangelo.  The last considered the greatest.  He was 89 and made it for his tomb.  - not satisfied with it - broke arm off of Jesus and didn't complete it, but beautiful.  Dome of Santa Croce was reuse  of St. Peters. and all others used same technique afterwards.  Saw statue of David.  (a copy of, real one in Florence salty)  etc. works of art.  Saw the famous doors on cathedral with the pieces missing, but not lost, from flood.  (creation).  Went to leather place and bought too much of course.  Went to David and Michaelangelo Square to overlook all of Florence, a beautiful view!  Back for supper - not the best - went for walk. - saw some remains of damage. - had espresso cafe - home to bed.  This is a big city and saw just a smattering.  Maybe that is why the disappointment coupled with the poor accommodations and mediocre food.
